We spend years in the classroom and thousands of dollars preparing for a vocation. How much time and money do we invest in learning how to do life and relationships well?
Since early history learners have paid teachers to share with them the wisdom they have acquired through study and life. Indeed proverbs says that learning to be wise and getting good judgment through counselors is the most important thing you can do to ensure success in life. It encourages monetary investment in good, biblical counsel, as it pays huge dividends that lead to a rich life (and bank account).
You can’t buy happiness, but you can learn how to be happy. So why not invest your time and money acquiring stock in wisdom?
Happy is the person who finds wisdom and gains understanding. For the profit of wisdom is better than silver, and her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. She offers you life in her right hand, and riches and honor in her left. She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.
Proverbs 3:13-18 (NLT)
Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding! Don’t forget one word! Don’t deviate an inch! Never walk away from Wisdom – she guards your life; love her – she keeps her eye on you. Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom! Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding! Throw your arms around her – believe me, you won’t regret it; never let her go – she’ll make your life glorious. She’ll garland your life with grace, she’ll festoon your days with beauty.” Dear friend, take my advice; it will add years to your life.
Proverbs 4: 5-10 (MSG)
Prefer my life-disciplines over chasing after money, and God-knowledge over a lucrative career. For Wisdom is better than all the trappings of wealth; nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her…Wealth and Glory accompany me [wisdom] – also substantial Honor and a Good Name. My benefits are worth more than a big salary, even a very big salary; the returns on me exceed any imaginable bonus. You can find me on Righteous Road – that’s where I walk – at the intersection of Justice Avenue, Handing out life to those who love me, filling their arms with life – armloads of life!
Proverbs 8:10-11, 18-21 (MSG)
Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.
Proverbs 9:11-12 (NLT)
Get wisdom – it’s worth more than money; choose insight over income every time.
Proverbs 16:16 (MSG)
