I started my first business when I was 16 years old. With some business cards I designed and printed at home, some locally screen printed t-shirts, and some old (borrowed) equipment, Spurlock PS&P was born. What I lacked in capital I made up for in tanker loads of sweat equity. I knocked on the doors of every restaurant in a 30 mile radius with a loss leader offer to clean their sidewalks and drive through for free. It wasn’t long before I had a modest, but profitable, customer list.
I learned a lot of valuable lessons during those early days. For example I learned customers counting on you for a thorough clean, before their regional managers comes through, hate being blown off so you can hang out with your girlfriend. I lost a “big” account to learn that lesson. It wasn’t, however, all a loss. I did gain a beautiful wife and mother to my seven kids. Some mistakes seem to have a funny way of turning out for the good.
I founded 3 more profitable small business prior to graduating from grad school with my Masters in Counseling. Shortly there after I founded what is now The Relationship Center. In a few short years, during a down economy, TRC has grown from a solo practice to 8 therapists in Springfield and Branson offices.
If necessity is indeed the mother of invention the challenge of growing The Relationship Center revealed the necessity of Springfield BackOffice.
To grow TRC to the company I knew it had to be I needed resources I couldn’t readily find. After much searching, with few answers, I did what any chronic entrepreneur would do when faced with a great opportunity and market demand. I started another company. Let me add here that I am so blessed to have a wife who loves me with all her heart in spite of my entrepreneurial sickness 🙂
The premise of Springfield back office is this:
As the found of an aggressive start-up I want all the human resources of an established company
- Accounting Systems so I don’t have mess with the daily bookkeeping,
- Creative Services to helm me articulate my message in a media driven culture,
- Customer Care to handle my clients with soft-touch service over the phone,
- Business Technology to make those finicky computers work for me instead of against me,
- Property Management so my investments don’t distract me from my business focus,
- Strategic Advising to give me timely advice and outside perspective at each stage of growth.
The problem is I can’t afford them.
I don’t have the money to hire all these division in house. Even if I did, I don’t have the demand volume to warrant it. And the register ringing I hear when I see employees twiddling their thumbs gives me a headache.
What if I could share an all-star team like this with other small businesses and start-up leaders?
What if we could pay only for the time that we actually use?
We could have access to an awesome team at exactly the scale we need them. That kind of back office help could really free us up to focus on our front office, developing our business, and maybe even having a life!
If after a long day working in m y front office I didn’t have to go home to enter my payables and create invoices by the midnight oil, what could I do with all that extra time?
What would we call such a God sent group of people?
