Telling Yourself The Truth
Could free you from Anxiety, Depression, and Anger.
You’re parched. You come in from some yard work on a scorching day and twist open the top of an iced down bottle of water. It takes about 15 seconds for you to down half of it. How do you feel? Pretty good right.
Now you flip on the tv and crash on to the couch to relax for a moment. An animated news woman comes on the screen with a breaking news story. A national water bottler just released an urgent warning. Thousands of water bottles have been contaminated with a potentially lethal substance. How do you feel now? Nervous? Anxious? Down right afraid?
Nothing has changed, except for your belief about the half empty bottle of water in your hand. It has gone from perfectly safe and refreshing to potentially lethal. Whether or not your bottle was contaminated you feel differently than you did the moment before your belief changed.
Beliefs are powerful. In fact beliefs, more than circumstances themselves, control how we feel. They tell our brain how to interpret a situation and what to feel in response to it.
The root of a great many emotional difficulties, including anxiety, depression, anger, and the likes, can be found in faulty beliefs. These faulty beliefs, or what William Backus calls misbeliefs, are to blame for many of the psychological and emotional struggles we experience.
When we allow thinking that isn’t true, such as beliefs that are inconsistent with the Bible, to frame how we interpret situations in our life, we can count on trouble. The key is to identify the misbeliefs and replace them with Truth.
When I was working on my undergrad a professor recommend Dr. Backus’s book to me and it changed the way I thought about a lot of things. The result was a drastic reduction in anxiety and anger. I would rank it among the top 10 most influential books in my life.
If you are struggling, with anything really, I recommend you pick up a copy and see how much of your struggle could be related to the way you think and what you tell yourself about the situations you’re facing. If you have trouble identifying your misbeliefs, a counselor can help. Counselors are trained to help you. They have thousands of hours of experience helping people just like you recognize and replace their misbeliefs.
